The CMI Congregation has been leading educational projects with the objective of assisting in social empowerment and nation building for many years now, following in the footsteps of its founding father St. Chavara. It oversees more than a hundred educational institutions spread out across the nation. The Congregation developed cultural centres after realising the value of cultural discussions for promoting social change and maintaining the secular fabric of the country. There are 23 such centres operating in India, with 3 centres in Kerala. Kerala's first Chavara Cultural Center opened its doors in Kochi in 1971.
The Chavara Cultural Center was founded with the intention of inspiring all facets of society with love, compassion, generosity, and motivation. Kozhikode didn't have a cultural centre until the late 1990s, despite being the Malabar region's cultural centre. So, the St. Thomas province of the Kozhikode CMI Congregation decided to start a non-sectarian, nonpolitical cultural centre. On October 7, 1996, a meeting was conducted in which the decision to build the Chavara Cultural Center was made in the presence of several well-wishers. The centre had the goal of promoting social cohesion through starting cultural exchanges. In addition to combating the rising tide of communalism and religious polarisation, it sought to encourage meaningful interference in the socio-political and cultural domains of the nation.
